MARIE HEURTIN

This story is inspired by real events that took place in France at the end of the 19th century. Born deaf and blind, Marie Heurtin, aged 14, is unable to communicate with the rest of the world. Her father, a modest craftsman, could not bring himself to have her committed to an asylum as advised by a doctor who judged her to be “stupid. In desperation, he went to the Larnay Institute, near Poitiers, where nuns took care of deaf girls. Despite the skepticism of the Mother Superior, a young nun, Sister Marguerite, makes a point of taking care of the “little wild animal” that is Marie and doing everything she can to get her out of her night…
